Optergy: Smarter Buildings with Efficient Energy Management

Buildings consume more than 70 percent of the world’s energy, half of which is wasted, states a study conducted by MIT and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. The study further reveals that nearly 90 percent of this wasted energy can be recovered by efficient energy monitoring. The advances seen in the IT industry over the last decade are finally working their way into energy efficiency solutions for buildings and equipment. Based in Issaquah, WA, Optergy focuses on outcomes that reduces risk involved in the customers’ business processes, improves productivity, and builds efficient energy performances. Aurora, the enterprise management software from Optergy, can be used as an enterprise system offering real-time, online access to monitor and control customers’ buildings meters, control systems, create reports and perform data diagnostics and analysis. Aurora combines energy and building management features, and uses an intuitive web interface accessible using a common browser. The software can be easily installed on simple hardware or a virtual machine, and requires no operating system or any other software dependencies. Being scalable, it manages BACnet or Modbus devices, and has built-in web based tools. Leveraging the software, users can effectively manage the energy usage in their buildings and be alerted if their energy consumption or building performance threatens their Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). The inherent design features of the Aurora interface, such as creating custom reports and analytics at the click of a mouse, have proven to be extremely valuable, especially in diversified, multinational organizations.

Furthermore, Optergy also offers an innovative building controller Proton, which uses an intuitive web interface, and connects, to a companion IOS or Android application to manage energy automatically. This controller and software permits even the smallest building to meter, monitor, and make use of actionable energy information. Being economical, this software manages up to 50 BACnet or Modbus devices, and has built-in programming and tools. Proton encloses some of the basic features like web displays, demand limiting program, DDC control logic, email and SMS alarm notifications.

“The building operations are often wrapped in layers of confusing events,” remarks Guzelimian. Optergy’s Intuitive visualization technology helps users to have a better look at building operations. Adding HTML content to energy management software allows users to quickly add content that is rich and dynamic to better see how they can make improvements to their systems. In an implementation highlight, Optergy’s Aurora systems helped Charles Sturt University (CSU) in collecting and analyzing building data. CSU had 17 buildings across the campuses with too many control systems managing lighting and other energy usage. The client implemented Optergy’s Aurora as a single supervisory interface for all integrated systems, including HVAC and the cogeneration plant. Aurora helped CSU to identify opportunities in HVAC control and manage peak demands in real time by using the cogeneration plant.

Optergy has recently launched Proton Building Controller product, which will bring even the smallest buildings full featured energy management. “To further assist our users fully benefit from this system Optergy will deploy a mobile companion app, which will offer new and interesting ways to engage users using mobile connectivity,” says Guzelimian.
